State University of NY Stephen K. Tompsett Memorial Fund Scholarship

The Trustees of Stephen’s Fund are pleased to announce the first recipient of the State University of NY Stephen K. Tompsett Memorial Fund Scholarship. This scholarship is granted to a SUNY student accepted for the Student Teaching in Australia program who personifies Stephen’s qualities and is committed to perpetuating his legacy of volunteerism and good works for children, education and charitable causes. The recipient should demonstrate Stephen’s qualities of love of learning, dedication to helping others through volunteerism and/or leadership, academic effort and/or achievement and desire to work with children to improve the educational process.

This year, there were 7 applicants for the Student Teaching in Australia program, 5 of whom applied for the scholarship. The students had to write an essay explaining how he/she exemplifies Stephen’s qualities. The deciding committee consists of: Carol Rossi-Fries, Instructor in School of Education and Professional Studies and a close family friend; Nicole Feml, Assistant Director, Office of Field Experiences & School Partnerships and a former participant in the Teach in Australia program; and Amy Guiney, Certification Officer & Director of Student Teaching.

They have chosen Tyler Brown, a 22 year old senior from Philadelphia NY (yes, there is a Philadelphia in NY!) His major is Childhood/Early Childhood Education with a concentration in History and he will be student teaching in Australia in June – September 2012. He is active in sports and represents his major at various events around campus. According to Carol, Tyler made a point of reading about Stephen on our website and Facebook page and referenced and quoted Stephen in his essay.

Tyler will be sent a check for $1500 and will be presented with a plaque at Convocation in May.

Congratulations to Tyler and good luck student teaching in Australia this summer!

Stephen K. Tompsett Award for Excellence in Technology

This year, the Trustees were so impressed with one St. Joseph’s graduate that they decided to grant a special award to Conor Proce for excellence in technology. Conor has dedicated a great deal of time throughout his grade school years to helping St. Joseph’s with technology maintenance and various other technical needs. In granting this Award, the Trustees wanted to recognize Conor’s integrity, fortitude, honest and loyalty to his school and classmates as well as his abilities in the field of technology. This Award included a medal and letter of commendation from the Trustees as well as $150.

September 2003
Evening of Remembrance 2003

On Sunday, September 28, 2003 Stephen's Fund hosted the second  "Evening of Remembrance" at the Tompsett home in Garden City. The event was attended by about 80 – 100 people, with many people unable to attend because of the Rosh Hashanah holiday. Because of scheduling conflicts, Stephen’s Fund had to hold the Evening on the holiday and we apologize for any inconvenience to our friends and colleagues of the Jewish faith. We know that all that could not attend were with us in spirit and we were promised many prayers during the holiday. For those that were able to attend, the Evening provided an opportunity for friends, family and colleagues to get together in a comfortable environment to celebrate Steve's life and works and to obtain an update on the good work Stephen’s Fund is doing in Steve’s name. Stephen's Fund received many generous donations that will allow Steve's good work to continue for some time. The Trustees wish to extend a very special thank you to the Carley Family, who in addition to giving us a very sizeable donation, paid for all the refreshments for the Evening.

The Trustees of Stephen’s Fund will be meeting in the near future to plan more good works in Steve’s honor. We   will update you as decisions about grants are made.

Thank you for remembering Steve and for keeping his wonderful spirit alive.

July 2002
Fund Grant Award - What's New

On behalf of the Trustees of The Stephen K. Tompsett Memorial Fund for Technology in Education I would like to update you on our recent activity. We have been incredibly busy continuing Steve's good work. In May, we sent out a Request For Proposal to four companies for the project to provide wireless internet access via laptops to the upper grades at St. Joseph's School, Garden City. In late June, we selected the company to do the work which will be completed by mid-August. This project was one that Steve was going to devote his time and expertise to as Vice President of the St. Joseph's School Board during the 2001-2002 school year. I and all the Trustees are honored to be able to fund this project in Steve's name thanks to your generosity. Stephen's Fund will be paying for wiring the school, installation, set up and one school year's worth of support and training as well as 8 Toshiba laptops. The ultimate goal is to have 24 laptops for the school and we hope to raise or help raise the money for the additional computers.

In addition, we are sending one of the St. Joseph's science teachers to Austin, Texas in the fall to be trained as Program Leader for the Girlstart After School Club which will be offered to the middle school girls in St. Joseph's in the 2002-2003 school year. This program provides girls with an after school club in math, science and technology in a hands-on, girl-friendly environment. We hope to expand this program to other middle school girls in Garden City and to investigate the availability (and hopefully offer) of a similar program appropriate for boys.

Finally, we are in the process of setting up the criteria and process for the Stephen K. Tompsett Student Award for Excellence in Math, Science or Technology. The goal of the Trustees is to grant an award each year to a graduating high school senior enrolled in a four year accredited university or college who has excelled in math, science and/or technology, beginning with the 2002-2003 school year. Initially we plan to offer one cash award of $1500 but hope to raise that to two awards in the near future, depending on donations to Stephen's Fund. We feel that this annual award exemplifies and continues Steve's interest in encouraging students to excel in his areas of expertise. Steve was a brilliant technologist and mentor and loved all aspects of the math and science disciplines. I can think of no better way to honor Steve's memory than by recognizing students' achievements in these fields while encouraging and inspiring them to continue their pursuits.

Thanks to Stacey Groh, Trustee (Steve's sister-in-law) and Indy Vishnudat and Kathy Colloton (and others) at Instinet Corporation, you can visit us at our website: www.stevetompsettmemorialfund.org

You can view information and updates about Stephen's Fund, access personal information about Steve and his life and read articles written about him. You can also download the award application form. If you choose, you can have updates emailed to you as they come out.

As you can see, Stephen's Fund is doing a lot - but we want to do more. Please consider another donation to help us continue Steve's good work. Contribution information can be found on the website.

Again, I and the Trustees want to extend our heartfelt appreciation for your contribution. Your generous support of the Stephen K. Tompsett Memorial Fund for Technology in Education is truly appreciated. I thank you for your kind thoughts as they are true signs of strength and encouragement in these difficult times.

Warmest Regards,
Dorry Groh-Tompsett
President and Head Trustee
